borderXing between France (Calais Frethun) and United Kingdom (Folkstone).

Friday 2nd November 2001.

First reconnaissance trip.

Equipment taken:
Journey
14:40 arrived at Calais Frethun station from Paris via eurostar.

Took 330 degrees magnetic heading in direction of tunnel entrance.

At Franglais wine warehouse moved closer to raliway track to.
take closer look at security.
Here is a junction where the freights trains slow to join main track.
Area is protected by an easily climbed metal green 8 foot high fence.
Spotted many signs of breakins under and over fence.

Many worn paths in the undergrowth reveal alot of recent activity.
disgarded blanket in a ditch on crest of hill could be lookout position
for train jumpers.
Nno cctv present here.

About 100 metres further down the track the fence was reinforced with
much barbed wire and wathced by 3 security guards with binoculors and radios.

Further along the fence bcomes double fence with impressive amounts
of barbed wire

Many signs of attemped and successful breakins both over and through fence.
Lots of flood lights.
Walked to where the motorway crosses the track where I am stopped
and searched by 2 friendly Police National who take my details
and warn me no to enter beyond fence otherwise they will arrest me.

They thought I was a journalist as I had been seen taking notes by the security guards.
My fake press card settled the matter.

Here I noticed an unsecurred exit/ entrance over fence here using motorway sign by bridge.

After crossing motorway the is another road bridge.
Beyond this the track is protected by outer 6 foot barbared wire fence,
then multiple cctv every 20 metres,
then 8 foot anticlimb metal fence with outer layer of electrified wires.

The road bridge is also fortified to prevent climbing down to track.

There are public spectators viewing trains coming and going into tunnel.
I crossed the bridge to other side of track and noticed
more fence damage marked with white and red polythene tape.

I head across open fields in the direction of a ridge.

On the ridge I find Font de Forge an old military camp
from which the sea is visible 3 km away.
Dover docks is also visible over the channel with binoculars.
I walked on heading 348 degrees magnetic to coastal radar station.
From here I then walked along the beach to calais.

Conclusion
It is clear that people jump on to the train when it slows to come
around the corner from merging track coming from freight depot.
Any other place along the track the trains will be moving too fast
to alight.

Some tunneling might aid access to this point.
