Border crossing between United Kingdom (Folkstone) and France (Frethun Calais).

Saturday 8th December 2001.

Reconnaissance trip.

Intent:
To discover viability of bording channel tunnel train and travelling
to France without ticket or passport.

Journey
From pillbox (TR 1978 3830) walked (bearing 143 degrees grid) down escarpment until footpath junction (TR 1995 3800).

Followed the right footpath parrallel to terminal perimeter fence. When path turned to go uphill by the gate, I carried straight on following ditch for about 100 metres. Here was a good hiding spot (TR 2030 3804) with long grass and bushes, that gives a good view of the perimeter road in both directions. There were street lights here, but of low intensity, casting light 10 metres on either side of the fence. I could see a series of bushes, starting about 30 metres from inside the fence, that ran to the utility bridge (TR 2020 3788).

I hid my rucksack under a bush and then walked to the fence.

I climbed the fence and ran directly to the bushes. Pausing at each bush I made my way to the corner of the utility bridge.

When moving I was careful to not move like a human. I would walk backwards, sideways and on all fours. Also immitating the movement of different animals. The human eye is highly trained to pick out human like movement.

Once at the brdige I took some photos of hiding places, a waiting train and the loading platform.

I then returned back to the fence the way I had come and climbed out.

I colected my rucksack from the bush and rested.

I then walked uphill to Saxon Shore Way footpath and then follwed it to Castle Hill (TR 2135 3789). From here I headed down hill and under the motorway (TR 2175 3800), finally ending my walk at Sainsbury (TR 2179 3755).

Conclusion
It would be very possible to approach Terminal from northern ridge,
scale the perimeter fence,
then crawl using bushes for cover to hiding spot under bridge.
Here one could wait for good moment to climb on commercial vehicle train.

Lookout on ridge with radio link could be very useful.

Could be done with minimal equipment:
