Empire is like a virus. You are either consumed or are forced to adopt its methods. Empire is the continual colonisation of new spaces, forever more abstract, and the construction of hierarchical power structures there in. As the level of abstraction rises the visability of the crimes of empire decrease. Description of piece. 1000 numbered symbols will be chalked onto various surfaces around Bristol. An ambiguous symbol that could be interpreted as number, enclosure of space or virus will be used. Each day I will walk around bristol chalking these marks enlarging my empire through the colonisation of new spaces. I have decided to provide a focal point for the work on the shed next to the Arnolfini. This should explain the marks around Bristol and the marks around bristol should generate interest about the work on the shed. Each time I visit the shed I will paint a space and then chalk one or more marks there in. As the space becomes full earlier sections will be painted over to make space for new marks.
