Inari: Hi, can I advertise your noodle please? Female manager: What? Inari: I'll eat a bowl of noodles in front of your shop and advertise your noodle. Female: Ah.. we have lots of Chinese students coming so we don't need advertisement. Good idea though. Inari: But how about advertising for British people? Female manager: But British people don't like our noodles. Too spicy and salty for them. Only for Chinese people. Inari: Ok fair enough. Thanks
Inari: It's a project, can I advertise your noodle in front of this shop with a spotlight on me? Male staff: What? Inari: Are you the manager? Male staff: No, there is no manager at the moment. Inari: So you don't have the authority to decide? Male staff: No. Inari: But anyway what do you think about this? Do you think it's going to work? Male staff: Ahh... I don't know. I just don't know because I have never seen anything like this before. Inari: Ok, Thanks.
Inari: Hi, are you the manager? Manager: Yes. Inari: Can I advertise your noodle in front of your shop please? Manager: What? Inari: Yeah, with this spotlight on me while eating noodle. Manager: We don't do that. Inari: Well but don't you think it's gonna attract people? Manager: Mmm... Inari: Do you think it's stupid? Manager: It's strange. Inari: Why? Manager: Because it's raining and your noodle will get wet. Inari: Oh I see.. Thanks anyway. Oh can I take a photo with you? It's a project. Manager: OK!
Inari: Hello? Male staff: Yes? Inari: Ah.. can I advertise your noodle in front of your shop please? Male staff: ....... Inari: I mean, with this light on me while eating noodle. Male staff: ............ Inari: It's a project and I'm doing an experiment. Male staff: ......... Inari: Don't you think it's going to attract people? Male staff: I'm busy. Inari: Oh ok!
1. Arabella: Female manager, she said it was an interesting idea but that her shop doesn't really need any extra advertising as her customer base are mainly chinese students who enjoy their native style spicy type noodles which most british people don't like so much. 2. Big bowl noodle: Male staff, Wouldn't give his agreement to project. Didn't have any idea what peoples reactions would be to inari standing outside the shop. He couldn't imagine anything as he hasn't seen anything like that before. 3. Chilli Chilli: Manager thought it was a stupid idea as it was raining outside so the noodles would get wet. Also he generally thought it was a strange idea. He agreed to have his photo taken for documentation of the project. 4. New Capital: The male staff didn't seemed to understand the concept and simply said he was too busy to help.
The whole point of this project is not only successfully getting noodles for free, but rather talking to a particular community to open up the boundaries of their sense of values. For Liverpool Chinatown workers, it must have been a completely strange experience but crossing borders like this on a daily basis could help melt away the rigidity of different racial, national, and hopefully religious relations.back to main
